Providing Help, Creating Hope
About Straight & Narrow

2004 marked the 50th Anniversary of a year which changed both the social fabric and health of a great nation. It was in 1954 that Dr. Salk first administered that vaccine which would virtually eradicate polio. It was the year that the Supreme Court ended school segregation, and it was the year that a small program with a grand vision emerged in Paterson, New Jersey.

Embedded within and repeated in its original Articles of Incorporation are the words "provide," and "assist." It has been over 50 years and Straight & Narrow still adheres to the principles upon which it was founded.

Over the last half century, this nation has experienced a sea change in its Health Care delivery system. Shifting national, state and local priorities, exigencies in public funding, and the emergence of Managed Care have created a new "landscape," to be sure.

Responsive and adaptive, Straight & Narrow continues in its path of diversity and growth toward addressing the needs of those with limited access and scant resources.

It is here at Straight & Narrow that over 60,000 people have discovered safety, compassion and a gifted staff, dedicated to providing an environment conductive to personal enlightenment, change and growth.

A non profit, community based organization, Straight & Narrow is funded by, and accountable to a wide range of federal, state and local entities addressing public health, public safety, childcare, educational and vocational services, and community development.

Given the longevity and scope of services, there are few communities or individuals not touched by Straight & Narrow and its programs.

As in 1954, Straight & Narrow remains committed to its "partnership" with the public, its funding sources and its clients who endeavor to achieve and maintain sobriety and productivity. It is our privilege to serve and our duty to provide the highest level of professional care.

Our history is but a foundation for our future.
